Thirteen

13

Thirteen years ago today at the tender age of 20, I married a wonderful man.  It was a sunny 70 degrees that day in Santa Monica and the skies were a beautiful blue.

He has become my very best friend… its not good news if I don’t get to share it with him.  The day is dull if he isn’t a part of it.  Knowing he is in my corner gives me an inner strength to face just about anything.  Nothing brings me so much pleasure as being able to make him laugh (which is rare- because as we all know I AM NOT FUNNY!).

We were both very young when we were married, and believe it or not had known each other less than a year.  I knew on our second date that I was going to marry him; I just knew.  Over the years when people hear our story some have said things such as “boy, you were lucky”.  The longer I’ve been married the more that phrase has bothered me.  Luck, has nothing to do with it.  I refuse to let some cosmic, karmic idea take the credit for the work and sacrifice we have put in to building this relationship.

I think for us, the big thing that makes our relationship work is commitment.  To each other and to our children.  Once we had that corner stone everything else just fell into place.  We both counter balance each others strengths and weakness, which I think makes us a pretty good team.

What about you, what do you think the key to a successful marriage is?

(p.s. made this illustration on my new bamboo tablet…what do you think?)

Congratulations! 13 down, eternity to go. :)

Marriage takes a lot of commitment, and a high degree of tolerance. Making a life together takes a lot of gratitude (thinking about all the things you’re grateful to him for), peace (keeping some of those thoughts to yourself), and giving (finding ways to serve each other every day).

Love the design, by the way.

Congrats! I remember when you moved into Tempe ward back then.

I think a healthy marriage requires good communication and the willingness of both parties to strive to keep it that way.
