Sharpening the Saw
(…also titled, why I love my husband)
My husband works every saturday which leaves me doing all the saturday stuff alone. Yesterday was an overwhelming Mom day; but it was also Girls Night Out. When my husband came home I tried to put words to the emotions I was feeling. I desperately wanted to go out withOUT a child, but I felt bad for leaving my kids after the brusque way we had spent the late afternoon. I also hated leaving my tiny 3 month old- even though I knew my husband would take wonderful care of her. The mantra running through my head was saying, “Good Mom’s don’t leave their babies just to go have dinner with girlfriends”.
Here is what he told me,
“If you spent all day sawing a log, just sawing and sawing, eventually your blade would get dull. You would accomplish much more if you stopped to sharpen your blade and then went back to sawing.”
So, last night I went out to “sharpen my blade” and what a nice time I had and I feel much lighter and better!

What a brilliant metaphor! And he’s so right… I think women are really good at trying to take care of everyone around us, but that often comes at the expense of our own well-being. I’m going to remember that comparison when I start feeling guilty for taking care of myself.

What a good boy. I vote you keep him. I was blessed to have married a like minded man and I can’t tell you how much I appreciate him. Hope you had a great time!

I agree with both you and your husband. It is very easy for me to tell others they need time for themselves but when it comes to me, I have the same problem you do. Glad you had a fun time.

Good mom’s DO leave their babies for just a little while. It’s good and healthy and when you get back, baby has a nice “new” mommy and so do the other children. I am glad you had a good time!
