Sally From the Mountains
Yesterday my 6yo ate my chocolate (you know, my I can make it through this day chocolate), even after I told her she couldn’t have it. She approached me with her I’m,-not-really-sorry-but-I-know-I-should-be look and said she was sorry she “accidentally” ate some of my chocolate. So I told her that she couldn’t have any Popsicles that day. She took her little stripey swim suited self out to the yard to pout. She pouted for quite awhile, stomping around the patio. She finally decided that she would come swim with us, where I gave her a new pair of goggles that she had been begging for. BUT, I wouldn’t take the pool cleaner out of the pool, so she decided she couldn’t swim…and was going to pout some more (are you sensing a theme here?).
My son and I ignored the pouting and went about with our afternoon until he reminded me of Sally From the Mountains. My husband read in a book once about a mother who would refer to her cranky daughter as “Sally from the Mountains” (10+ if you know which book it was!!), and the mother would ask when Sally would come home, because this surly creature was not her daughter. As I said, my son reminded me of this. He and I had started to talk about going inside and making some popcorn. Pouty girl chimed in that she wanted some popcorn too. I said to her that of course my daughter could have some popcorn, but NOT Sally from the mountains- as she was not a very nice girl. She immediately giggled and the pouty girl was gone, just like that! I texted my husband during the ordeal:
me: “Lucky us, Sally from the mountains is visiting”
him: “displaced by the Wallow fire no doubt”
While the devastating fire in eastern Arizona right now is no laughing matter, his witty response made me laugh out loud!
After that we all went inside where we made our own microwave popcorn, using this tutorial. Super duper easy, I can’t believe it never occurred to me before. I don’t think I’ll ever buy microwave popcorn again!

How clever! What’s the book’s title?
