Pink, it’s the new Black

Pink, at least it is my new black. I thrifted my daughter some pink chucks for a mere $7.50 today! pink chucks

On another note (my head is just spinning with things today) Did anyone catch last night’s Lost? Wow, it gave me lots of answers, but even more questions. Like, now that Jack knows that Aaron is his nephew, what is it that keeps him and Kate apart? I think I have it figured out how the 6 survive, but I’m really thrown on how Ben ends up in Liberia (or where ever it is he ends up). I dreamed about the show last night, people I knew became characters and Ben was able to let people temporarily leave the island to visit the grand canyon, but they weren’t really off the island, and children that turned into bears and back again.

One more tangent for you. I love embroidered buttons, I think they look so cool. I thrifted some buttons a few weeks back and decided to give it a try. The embroidery was easy (if tiny) and I used the pattern provided on the button pack for how big of a circle to cut of your fabric. Then I attempted to assemble them. Linen is heavy and thick and I could not get the back on (ok after MUCH effort I got one on). So the next one I cut a little smaller- hoping it would cause the back to go on easier-nope, the fabric wasn’t enough to stretch.

Embroidered Buttons

Has anyone else ever tried these with linen?  What is your secret for getting the backs on?  Do I really need to go buy one of those machines?

No, you absolutely don’t need to buy a machine! First, try a dab of gluestick on the button itself, it will help to hold the fabric and design in place while you kind of gently tug on the back. If that doesn’t work, try a different linen, but don’t give up. They really are worth the effort, I think. Good luck!

To get the back on the covered buttons, sometimes you just need to make sure you’re on a really hard surface. Sometimes I can’t get them on if I’m working on my cutting table but if I take them down to my basement and use the cement floor they will go on easier. Your embroidery looks really cute one those buttons.

Cute button! Too bad about the getting the back on. As for Lost, I had to stop watching it part way through the 1st season, I got so fed up with it. What the heck was the monster in the forest??? :)

I have made covered buttons and the ones that come with a little blue plastic pusher & holder work best. You put the holder on the table, put the circle of fabric over it, then the button top over that, push it down a bit, then put the back of the button over & use the pusher to get it tight. I wouldn’t bother with the other kind of buttons where you have to use your fingers ‘cuz I had the same trouble you are having.

I just watched Lost last night during a 4:00 am baby feeding. :) What the heck is up with Claire disappearing? It was like she was in a trance when Locke saw her in the cabin. Really weird. I’m just REALLY hoping that they give us all the answers at the end. I heard the last episode will be in 2010. I love Lost, but I’m glad they have an ending planned.

    Love the button!

I tried making them with linen but I didn’t have much luck. I succeeded with one but I think it would come apart if I touched it too much. I love linen but it’s so fluid!
The kit with the pusher is easy peasy though.

I LOVE those shoes!! I want to see her in them — can she come play at my house??

Oh no! A lost spoiler!!! I’m still working through season 3.
As for the buttons, I don’t like the kind of blanks you’re trying - I’ve used those before and it’s really hard to get *any* type of fabric sunk into those teeth. There’s another type of blank (I think called half ball cover buttons or something like that) that I like much better. And yes, you need the little plastic pusher thing!
