On My Mind
- FYI, I got 10/12 items crossed off yesterday’s to-do list. The blanket didn’t get worked on, the cub scout activity was not planned, and it turns out emma’s dress needs more alterations.
- service. i like to help people. i hate seeing people in need and doing nothing. the hardest part of serving for me is the listening. i’m more than happy to bring you a cake if you’re feeling blue, or dinner if you’ve had a baby- that comes easily to me. however the real sacrifice of service to me is the sitting. the just being there and listening, or holding a hand, or providing a shoulder for tears. it’s not that i don’t want to do these things (i really really do) but they don’t come natural to me. this is a character flaw that bothers me. i want to be the listener.
- i agreed to put together a web page for my son’s schools silent auction. again with the liking to help, but i hate building web pages. for me it is like having a basic understanding of the french language and then being thrown into the heat of paris and trying not to get burned; constantly looking into the french/english dictionary for help. sigh.
- i don’t like Halloween. it seems like a lame holiday to me, although i realize lots of people like it. i don’t dress up, neither does aaron. i like to sew and be creative, but i hate sewing my children Halloween costumes (but i am too snobby to buy pre-made costumes). my son wants to be a bat. i’m thinking black t and shorts with imitation organza sewn to the sleeves for wings…maybe some black sequins along the edges of the wings, and some plastic fangs. the daughter doesn’t know what she wants to be, i’d like her to be little red riding hood but i just don’t think i’m up for making it. any 3yo girl suggestions?
ok, this post is starting to sound too negative for me…let’s add some sunshine for your tuesday morning pleasure. positive things on my mind.
- i love my life, and am grateful everyday for it (really!). i’m thankful for my health, my family, my sewing machine… i’m so grateful for the opportunities i have to earn an income (in a creative outlet kind of way) from the comforts of my home while i tend my little monkey’s. it’s more the creative expression than the money that makes IT for me.
- having my husbands siblings live close by- really awesome. having family support is vital the older my kids get. example? i’m not very good at scienc-y things, so, i’m roping one of my husbands brothers into doing a science fair project with my son.
- it’s fall, i really like fall. sunday nights low was 44degrees!!! they are expecting temps near the low 90′s by friday, but i’m soaking up the cold front as best i can
- i have a few ideas up my sleeve for an october giveaway (probably next week), i think everyone will really like this one! so tell your friends and come back.
Oh- one last thing. lately i’ve been playing around with the idea of creating a “i read HHD” button for people to post on their blogs. what do you think, would you want one?

You sound like you have a lot on your plate at the minute chicken, remember, being there for someone and doing the practical things is just as good as being a listener – different people are valued in times of crisis just for being there. I bet you are a better listener than you give yourself credit for. And sometimes the practical stuff is a god send just for it happening and someone recognising someone else’s need. Be kind to yourself chick. Oh, and I’d like a button please! x

Suggestion for 3 year old…my daughter was a nurse one year…super cute and easy to make…little apron made out of cheap white muslin, with a little white hat…both with red cross. White tights, white tennies and if you have a little doctor kit you are done. If you want a photo let me know! It was cute and no one else had the same idea! (And all the nurse-mommies loved it.)
Great job on your list!

You are awesome. Not only because you accomplished 10/12 items on your list yesterday but you are brave enough to put down things on your mind. I would be afraid of what I would write. I think you are a better listener than you think and I am right there with ya, I can make dinner or cookies or bread much better than I can sit and be compassionate (I don’t know if that is the right way to put it). I have gotten better over the past few years but really I have to work on it.
I don’t even know what my own kids are going to be for Halloween and it is painful because they only wear them to the Ward Halloween party since we go to Disneyland on Halloween.

I would like a “I read HHD” button. I read your blog everyday! You are very inspiring.

I want a button, too!
Dean was a bat last year and a picture is up on my blog. Just black pants & shirt with shear wings and big black ears on a black beanie. Very easy. Look under the Oct 2007 archives. I’d make it easier with a link for you, but that would defeat the “no strangers on my blog” goal I’m working on.
I love the little nurse idea for E. Or even easier would be to resurrect one of P’s old costumes. Do you still have the blue bird wings from last year? Would she go for that?

For an easy red riding hood- find a red blanket, piece of fabric, sheet, etc. lay on the diagonal. the top corner will become the hood with some cuts and hemming. The two corners below the hood can have ribbons, or be trimmed and hemmed into ties to go around the shoulders. Trim the bottom corner off so it is no longer pointed, hem and use ribbon or another fabric for trim. Under the red cloak, a simple light colored dress or apron. Dark dress shoes. Have her carry a cute basket for her candy
I am amazed at all you do and can accomplish Heather. You have a big heart.

I think it’s wonderful you do things for people when they need it. Many people can’t be bothered to do that. I have no doubt you’re a great listener too. Also, I’m glad you’re going to the concert for the Nielsens. You have me curious about Mindy’s music now.
