Good Day Sunshine

It was a beautiful day today, I opened all of the doors to let in the beautiful scent of the neighbors blooming grapefruit tree.  It smelled so good (like orange blossoms mixed with night blooming jasmine) that I clipped a few branches with buds and put them in a vase.

We spent the end of our beautiful day together building our garden box.

yes, my daughter is wearing Elmo slippers, and I’m not sure why.  Everybody got a turn to help build the 5′ x7′ box.

My job was to weed the spot we chose for the garden and to try and level it.

We’re going to try the Square Foot Gardening techniques this year.  I’ve heard good things and am optomistic that I can keep a garden alive.  I’m scouring the internet for desert gardening tips and trying to decide what to plant.  Now…where can I get 35 cubic feet of soil?

Heather, I’m emailing you a link to a booklet my Grandfather put together on gardening. I think you’ll find it very helpful since your climate is very similar to his. Good luck! It looks fantastic! :) K8

Oh that is going to be so great! K8 – send me that link too ok? ;)
I have a good friend that swears by square foot gardening. I can’t wait to see how it goes for you.

Our snow is starting to melt (but of course, we’ll get tons more tomorrow) so I am getting the itch to go plant my lettuce and spinach!

I LOVE gardening in the SW. I’m in AZ and so I know things can grow in the H.E.A.T.! I’m wondering how much gardening you’ve done before? This topic always intrigues me. I’m by no means an expert. However, I can grow tomatoes like no other! I love a salsa garden (green onions, tomatoes, cilantro, and my mother grows the limes!)! Other things I’ve grown in the heat are zuchini, squash, watermellon, corn, lettuce, carrots, green peppers, cucumbers, beans, peas, grapes…As long as I have an automatic watering system, I’m good to go! I’ve tried strawberries with no success, but my SIL (also living in the desert) grows them with no problem. I usually grow my stuff from seed (because I’m cheap and I think it teaches my kids so much). I usually start the seeds in January. I still have tomatoes, cilantro, green peppers, and carrots growing from being planted Jan 08! Those tomatoes are work horses! I love trying new varieties every year (jelly bean are fun, but good old cherry tomatoes are my favorite). Can’t wait to see how your garden grows!

I used to garden quite a bit several years back. The Arizona Herb Association is a great garden club with monthly meetings and TONS of good help and information. For top soil and such try GroGreen (you can google their phone and address). They will deliver by the truck load. Good luck!
