Vacation After Math

vacation aftermath

I don’t want to see the inside of my van for at least a week!  After 3 days of driving we are home.  The baby cried from Flagstaff to Phoenix out of exhaustion (apparently she no longer sleeps in cars), nothing I tried would help her.

We got home, Aaron dropped me and the baby off (took the other kids out for dinner).  I took her into her own dark room, turned on the white noise machine and nursed her.  She didn’t fall asleep…instead she perked up and began giggling.  Oh, that one day I might understand children.  2 hours later I FINALLY got her to sleep.

Grateful to be home, and to still have a home (thanks Emily!).

Summer Love

Friday, July 9th, 2010

Nothing says summer to me like curling up on the couch (or by the pool if it weren’t 110+) with a really good book!  I’ve said it here before that I LURVE historical fiction…just love it.  When the publishers sent me an advance copy of “The Silence of God” (by Gale Sears) I dove right it!

This book will appeal to anyone with an interest in the Bolshevik Revolution, or historical fiction in general. It is a captivating story of the Lindlof family- who were the first (and only for a very long time) Mormons in St. Petersburg, Russia.  The story centers on the relationship between Agnes (one of the Lindlof children) and her friend Natasha.  Natasha is wrapped up in the Bolshevik ideals and it causes stress on their friendship.

The story chronicles their friendship, the girls’ relationship with God and the Bolshevik Revolution.  What I really appreciated about the story was the foot notes at the end of each chapter explaining the historical accuracy of the details in the chapter.

For those of you detail oriented people out there, you’ll notice that the front cover of the July 2010 Ensign reflects the real life story of what took place in the Summer Gardens with the Lindloff family.  I really enjoyed the book and found that I couldn’t put it down.  I spent every spare minute (while waiting for the water to boil as I cooked dinner) reading the story!

The one thing that troubles me about a good book is that eventually I finish it!  I’m leaving very soon for Wyoming and need some good summer reading to take with me.  Is there a book that you’ve read recently that you just adored?  Please leave some recommendations!

Overheard Today

Sunday, June 13th, 2010

sunday afternoon
(my husband doesn’t like it when I post pics of him online….)

Overheard at my house Sunday afternoon….

“Mom, you’re stupid” (followed by a trip to time out)

“Mom can I go to the bathroom?” (while the home teachers were over- only the child didn’t go to the bathroom, he went to play in his room).

But, the BEST thing I heard all day was;
“Want me to take her so you can rest?”

I LOVE my husband, he is my best, BEST friend.

ode to the pacific

Saturday, March 13th, 2010

dear pacific ocean-

tide & kelp

you have been a constant in my life since I was 3. I’ve never been too far from you, except for the 5 years I spent here.  I have marveled at your beauty from the Puget Sound to Kauai and many many points in between.   There is nothing like waking up to the sound of your waves lapping against the shore, the cool sea mist stinging my eyes and the gritty feeling of sticky sand.

I have spent hours staring into your vast waters, pondering many of the deep questions of life.  I find such calm and such clarity upon your shores.

babers & me

Now I bring my children to you, that they too make take comfort in the sound of your waves, and in the enveloping warmth of the suns rays as they frolic on your shores.  That they may spend their youth on your shores, and learning to swim against your strong current.  I want them to know what it feels like to rush into your cool may waters and them warm themselves on your sun beaten rocks.

That they will see the beauty of your creation and never stray too far.

May we meet again soon…

Who wants to look like Cindy Crawford anyway!

Monday, March 1st, 2010

Babers was 2 months old yesterday…I decided it was time for a real work out, not just walking.  So this morning I popped in a VHS tape I thrifted a while back of the Cindy Crawford workout (perhaps I take this thrifting thing a bit too far?), I remember doing it in high school a few times and thinking it was good, so surely it will help me now.

Well, one 45 min workout later and I could barely stand because I was so dizzy and felt like I was going to loose my breakfast.  I think I over did it.  I proceeded to then lay on my bed in the fetal position for 2 hours before the nausea passed.  I’m feeling better now, but decided I needed a chocolate cream egg to give me the strength needed to go shower (because totally undoing everything I accomplished with chocolate is the smart thing to do, right?).

I’ve decided the tape is going in the trash and I will continue walking- and NOTHING MORE, because really, who wants to look like Cindy Crawford anyway if it requires that kind of effort 3 days a week.  Not me.  In all reality I’m pretty happy with my body, just a little tummy jiggle that I would like to eliminate is all.  Surely there is another way…
